Description

The Powerline Technician (Lineman) performs assembly or repair work on electrical energy transmission and distribution lines or on energy transformation stations. The lineman may work for a construction contractor specializing in this field or for the operator of a public electrical network.

Responsibilities

    Erect and maintain steel, wood or concrete poles. Install, maintain, and repair overhead and underground power lines and cables, insulators, conductors, lightning arrestors, switches, transformers, street lighting and other associated equipment.
    Carry out assembly or repair work on electrical energy transmission and distribution lines or on energy transformation stations.
    Handle everything relating to an overhead or underground line, from the erection of a structure to the laying of a cable network, including repair and maintenance, in accordance with established safety and quality standards.
    Carry out the assembly and installation of pylons.
    Carry out the framing of wooden posts.
    Carry out catenary work.
    Carry out any other tasks relating to operations.
    Use specialized tools and equipment such as booms, cranes, lifts and aerial work vehicles to safely complete tasks at height.
    Work as a team to pull and tension cables, attach insulators, mount transformers and perform other tasks necessary to install power lines.
    Perform inspections of power lines to detect potential problems such as damaged cables, cracked insulators or weakened poles.
    Diagnose and resolve electrical faults on transmission and distribution lines, coordinating repairs with other team members.
    Follow applicable safety procedures, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and complying with electrical safety standards.
    Document work performed, including inspection reports, repairs performed and hours worked, to ensure traceability and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

    Degree in power line assembly obtained through an industry-recognized training program or equivalent.
    Journeyman Red Seal Powerline Technician.
    General knowledge of line materials, trade-related practices and standards, and operating rules and regulations.
    Be autonomous and meticulous.
    Have good physical condition, good dexterity and a sense of balance (agility and flexibility).
    Be able to work in a team.
    Be able to travel regularly outside your home region, often for extended periods.
    Apply occupational health and safety rules.
    Be able to work at height.
