Description

The Health and Safety Technician plays a critical role in managing and implementing safety standards on construction sites. They are responsible for promoting a safety-oriented culture, preventing accidents, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations. This position involves regular visits to construction sites (building and civil engineering), training workers, and collaborating with project managers to identify and mitigate risks. The Health and Safety Technician acts as an expert advisor to ensure a safe work environment.

Responsibilities

    Identify and assess potential risks on construction sites.
    Implement and monitor health and safety prevention programs.
    Ensure compliance with health and safety policies, regulations, and standards.
    Conduct regular site inspections to identify and correct hazardous conditions.
    Lead training sessions and awareness programs for employees on health and safety best practices.
    Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses, prepare detailed reports, and propose corrective actions.
    Collaborate with managers, supervisors, and workers to integrate prevention measures into daily operations.
    Oversee the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure its availability.
    Maintain up-to-date health and safety records, including inspection, incident, and training reports.
    Contribute to the development and updates of safety and prevention plans for projects.
    Ensure that company practices comply with provincial and federal occupational health and safety regulations.
    Serve as the primary point of contact with regulatory agencies during audits or official inspections.

Requirements

    Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Studies, or a related field.
    Recognized health and safety certification (e.g., NCSO, CRSP, or equivalent) applicable in Canadian provinces.
    Relevant experience in a similar position (preferred), ideally in the building or civil engineering sectors.
    Solid understanding of occupational health and safety regulations and standards across Canadian provinces.
    Excellent communication skills to train, advise, and raise awareness among teams.
    Strong analytical skills to assess situations, solve problems, and recommend practical solutions.
    Organizational abilities to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
    Proficiency in software for managing health and safety documentation (e.g., Excel, Word, specialized platforms).
    Valid driver’s license to travel to various sites.
    Leadership and a collaborative approach to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
