Description
The Demolition Labourer participates in dismantling and deconstruction operations on various sites (building, industrial, renovation, civil works). Under the supervision of the demolition foreman or crew lead, they perform manual tasks and prepare work areas to ensure safe and efficient operations. The role requires caution, good physical fitness, strict adherence to safety procedures, and the ability to work as part of a team in sometimes constrained environments.

  •  Strip down more complex structures under the supervision of an operator or specialist (cutting light structural elements, removing non-load-bearing components).
  •  Load, transport and dispose of debris and materials to sorting areas or appropriate containers (skips, roll-off bins).
  •  Sort recyclable or reusable materials and segregate hazardous waste in accordance with established procedures.
  •  Assist heavy equipment operators (excavator, backhoe, mini-excavator, crusher): spotting, stabilizing and signalling manoeuvres.
  •  Use hand and power tools safely: jackhammers, sledgehammers, circular saws, grinders, hammer drills, etc., following safety instructions.
  •  Install and verify containment measures when work involves dust or contaminants (plastic sheeting, local exhaust/filtration systems).
  •  Take part in simple decontamination tasks (localized cleaning, controlled vacuuming) and report any suspected hazardous materials (asbestos, lead).
  •  Follow lockout/tagout and utility isolation procedures (gas, electricity, water) prior to intervention, in collaboration with qualified personnel.
  •  Perform basic maintenance on tools and equipment (cleaning, lubrication) and report defects or breakdowns.
  •  Maintain safe behaviour, wear required PPE and apply proper lifting and ergonomic practices.
Requirements
  •  Experience in demolition, construction or general manual labour is an asset.
  •  Knowledge of and respect for on-site safety rules (use of PPE, lifting procedures, collective protection measures).
  •  Basic safety training or awareness recommended (e.g., WHMIS, fall protection, site safety orientation).
  •  Familiarity with sorting and disposal techniques for construction waste; awareness of asbestos and other contaminants is an asset.
  •  Ability to use hand and power tools while following safety procedures.
  •  Good physical condition, stamina and ability to work in varied postures (kneeling, at height, confined spaces).
  •  Strong observational skills to identify hazards and prevent risks.
  •  Autonomy, rigor and a collaborative team attitude.
  •  Valid driver’s licence and mobility to travel to different sites (often required).
  •  Additional certifications valued depending on the project: asbestos awareness/handling, confined-space entry, aerial work platform (AWP) licence, equipment operator certification, first aid.
