Description
The HVAC Refrigeration Technician installs, commissions, services and repairs heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems on a variety of sites (residential, commercial, industrial). Depending on the project and specialty, they work on heat pumps, cooling towers, air handling units and refrigeration equipment. This role demands a solid understanding of thermal and refrigeration principles, electromechanical skills and strict adherence to safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities
• Read and interpret HVAC-refrigeration plans, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical schematics.
• Prepare and install system components (compressors, evaporators, condensers, ductwork, piping).
• Perform refrigerant connections: brazing, crimping, securing piping and installing valves.
• Commission systems: charge refrigerant, adjust pressure/temperature settings and balance airflows.
• Troubleshoot faults and malfunctions (leaks, electrical or mechanical issues) and carry out necessary repairs.
• Conduct preventive maintenance: clean components, replace filters, check pressures and ensure system integrity.
• Calibrate and adjust controls and automation devices (thermostats, sensors, VFDs).
• Write detailed service reports and maintain up-to-date technical documentation and maintenance records.
• Comply with safety regulations (building codes, electrical code, lifting procedures, PPE) and keep work areas tidy.
• Coordinate with other trades (electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians) to manage interfaces and hand-offs.
Requirements
• Diploma in Industrial Refrigeration, Refrigeration Engineering or a related field.
• Provincial certification or licence for refrigerant handling (e.g. Quebec Gas Vapour licence F or equivalent).
• Hands-on experience installing and servicing HVAC-refrigeration systems is an asset.
• Proficiency in brazing, crimping and welding refrigeration piping.
• Strong understanding of refrigeration circuits, heat load calculations and hydraulic schematics.
• Basic electrical skills for wiring and diagnosing electrical components.
• Skilled in the use of measurement tools: gauges, multimeter, leak detector, combustion analyser.
• Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and manage multiple sites.
• Self-motivation, rigour and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for client and team interactions.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel frequently between job sites.
