Description
The Steel Structural Designer (drafter) is responsible for producing technical drawings and detailed plans for steel structures for construction projects. This role is crucial to ensuring accuracy and compliance of structural steel designs, working closely with engineers, architects and other members of the project team.
Responsibilities
• Review project specifications and client requirements to understand structural steel needs.
• Use computer-aided design (CAD) software specializing in the design of steel structures to create detailed technical drawings and plans, including beams, columns, frames, stairs and connections.
• Determine and calculate the functional, physical, dimensional, structural or geometric constraints of parts.
• Produce the workshop and assembly drawings necessary for the manufacturing of the various components of steel structures.
• Produce assembly plans containing the required sections and details.
• Prepare for production with all documents necessary for production and shipping (cutting list, shipping list, etc.); respecting budgets and deadlines.
• Work closely with structural steel engineers, architects and other project team members to integrate structural steel drawings into the overall building design.
• Ensure that drawings and plans comply with building codes, industry standards and regulatory requirements in force.
• Make revisions and changes to drawings in response to feedback from engineers, architects or clients, ensuring changes are properly documented and implemented.
• Prepare and organize technical documentation, including detail plans, assembly plans, material lists and fabrication drawings required for the fabrication and construction of steel structures.
• Provide technical support during the construction phase by answering contractor questions, clarifying details of steel structure drawings, and assisting in resolving field issues.
• Carry out regular quality checks to ensure the accuracy and consistency of the drawings produced, as well as compliance with required standards and specifications.
Requirements
• Degree in architecture, civil engineering, building design, or the equivalent.
• Previous experience as a steel structure draftsman, an asset.
• Good knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) software specializing in the design of steel structures, such as Tekla Structures, Advance Steel, or equivalent.
• In-depth knowledge of building codes, steel construction standards and structural design practices.
• Ability to interpret architectural plans and technical specifications related to steel structures.
• Attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, high quality drawings.
• Good knowledge of reading plans.
